Juniper Research analyst Sian Rowlands says a move by Facebook to copy the Flipboard model is something the social network could do although it's not necessarily something that it should do. One of the likely features of a Facebook app would be matching the content to the interests of a user. The rumours, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, are that the Paper app could be released this month, ahead of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's keynote presentation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in a few weeks time. Then came reports that Facebook is set to release Paper, a Flipboard-like news magazine app which would help Facebook keep its users within its virtual walls by bringing more outside content inside the social network. Leaked photos of what is reportedly the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone also shows tiles that look like a combination of Flipboard and Google Now. The interface lets users create up to five pages each with customisable panels of live tiles, and has similarities with both Flipboard and the Windows Phone interface.
First, at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Samsung unveiled Magazine UX, a user interface for its new range of tablets that replaces the traditional Android icons. This year the focus has already switched to Flipboard and its ability to let people flip through content as they would with the pages of a real-life magazine.
Last year, much of the talk about user interfaces on mobile devices was focused on Apple's moves to kill skeuomorphism, (which was where its software icons were designed to mimic their real-life counterparts) and to instead embrace a flat and non-realistic design. IT'S taken more than three years but the magazine-style Flipboard app is finally starting to live up to its promise as a sign of things to come.
